Pleasant Hill Nursery Company History |
|
Pleasant Hill Nursery was founded by Mel and Ann Steffenson out of their passion of plants and dream of starting a small nursery in a rural setting. Realizing he wished to pursue his passion for propagation, Mel moved his family to Pleasant Hill in 1981 as he was nearing retirement from Pacific Northwest Bell. What initially began as a hobby turned into a small business on approximately 2 acres in which Mel and Ann grew and sold rhododendrons, azaleas, Japanese maples and assorted perennials.
By 1988, Mel realized his hobby and small business had the potential to grow into something more. A year later, Dave Daniel (Mel's son-in-law) became involved in the business and they quickly began to build the business and expand the facilities and varieties offered. Amy remained focused on her marketing firm, Daniel & Company. In 1989, Dave and Amy bought the neighboring property and home to allow for expansion and a closer proximity to the growing company. Two years later, after working beside Mel for many years, Dave became Managing Partner. Amy continued focusing on her professional endeavors while simultaneously providing marketing and administrative support to Pleasant Hill Nursery. In 1994, expansion continued with the purchase of the 60-acre Brabham Farm. Eventually Mel began to phase into his second retirement and in 2005, Dave and Amy bought Mel’s remaining interest in Pleasant Hill Nursery. Brabham Farm is now the nursery’s main location with more than 40 acres in production. The original Sunny Hill location now serves as propagation and production facilities. The nursery grows more than 300 varieties and ships plants throughout the west coast and beyond.
Now as a well-established grower and nursery in the Pacific Northwest, Pleasant Hill Nursery is grateful for the unwavering support of long-time loyal customers and vendors. The nursery’s success depends on its close relationships with these individuals and the support of organizations such as the Oregon Association of Nurseries. |
