Chinese New Year is January 23rd, 2012. Plant this Nandina in your landscape now and you will have beautiful berries to decorate your house as they do in China, with the berries of nandina. The bright red berries appear in the winter, just when the landscape benefits from the interest they provide and the birds need the sustenance
The Chinese and Japanese have grown Nandina domestica in their gardens for centuries. And why not? They are sturdy, drought-tolerant, deer-resistant and evergreen. Expect to see creamy-white flowers bloom in the summer. ‘Moyer’s Red’ is a great variety, with bright red foliage in the fall and winter. This plant requires no pruning, although you might not be able to resist clipping some branches to bring inside to enjoy in a flower arrangement. Nandina will withstand heat and cold, and can be planted in full sun to part shade. It will grow to 6 feet tall and 4 feet wide. It makes a pleasing accent shrub or a beautiful, interesting hedge.
