We get a lot of questions from customers about hedge material. What makes a good hedge? How can I block the view of the road and increase privacy in my yard? What hedge is low-maintenance? What hedge is fast-growing for an instant screen?
We grow a wide variety of hedge plants: from small, low hedges that stay a few feet tall to large trees that form a screen at over 60 feet. One common hedge
Would you like a deep, dark beauty in your garden this summer? May we suggest Blackbird penstemon. Rich, violet-purple tubular flowers cover this hardy perennial and bloom summer through autumn. Many hummingbirds will visit this plant. As well as adding color to your garden, penstemons make great cut flowers for your home. Plant pemstemons in full sun, they are drought tolerant and deer proof once established. If you prune back the spent flowers, penstemons are long bloomers, starting in early summer until frost in fall. The color will attract you and you’ll want to have swaths of them in your garden.
Dave and I had the pleasure of attending the NW Flower & Garden Show last week in Seattle, Washington. This was the first year we’ve attended and I must say it was quite impressive. The show filled up several rooms of the downtown Seattle convention center. The display gardens were absolutely stunning. Huge. I couldn’t begin to imagine how much work must have gone into designing and constructing these massive gardens inside the convention center.
I was thinking about how to sum up my feelings about this show. I think I went believing that I’d come back with my focus on plants. However, what really struck me at this show was the creativity and inspiration I felt about garden design. I was overwhelmed with the design inspiration I felt about creating outdoor living spaces with everything from plantings, pavers and night lighting to art, accessories and outdoor structures galore. I’ve never felt such a desire to get out into my own garden
In our effort to interact/network with other businesses, Josh and I traveled south to Cottage Grove to visit Sustainable Agricultural Technologies, Inc. They specialize in vermicomposting (worm compost) and compost tea systems. Our friend, Michelle, works there and invited us down to see what was going on and see how we could use this in our business. The owner Bruce Elliott used to build destruction proof mailboxes. He grew tired of all the angry people calling to complain about the people who were smashing mailboxes and moved on to something new. Interested in vermicomposting, (worm composting) he called a guy in the San Juan Islands who built a worm bin called a worm wigwam
We have had some substantial rain fall here in the valley and we have started digging our ball & burlap material. Today the crew is working on leylandii cypress, otto luyken laurel, and schipka laurel. When we get a solid frost and the deciduous trees drop their leaves we will be able to start digging those as well. Let us know if there is something specific you would like
