A Grower Perspective

Sometimes you walk by a garden a hundred times and it’s just there and then comes the day you walk by and all is knitted together in an unbelievable way that could never have been planned out.  When you come by our nursery check out the combination along the front of the building, planted in stages it came to the ‘beauty point’ a few weeks ago and is just getting better as things leaf out more and as buds begin to flower.  Unlikely plant combination that are more that the sum of their totals.  Just Lovely!  Some of the plants in the photo are; Chamaecyparis obtusa ‘Wells Special’, Provence Lavender, Blue Pacific Juniper, Golden Sage, Weeping Blue Atlas Cedar, Roseglow Barberry and even a lettuce.

Dave from Dancing Lizard came by last Friday for a presentation of his succulent collection.  He pulled in with a van full of sedums, sempervivums, jovibarba, and echeveria and other things in the ‘hen and chicks’ or succulent family.  The man could barely get things out of the back of his vehicle and we were oohing and aahing and wanting every one of the plants he brought out.  They were available in small pots, stuffed into stone animal shapes, (frogs & chickens) elegantly planted in Grecian urns type containers and in hyper-tuffa pots.  Do we want to know about them? Yes but we just want them and all of them.  So please come and visit our collection of succulents.  We will share some with you so you can add them to your garden.

 Very exciting news: Our new crop of #1 blueberries are available! Blueberries are one of our most popular sellers- and for good reason. Blueberries are delicious and blueberry plants are beautiful additions to your landscape. ‘Legacy’ blueberry, for example, is evergreen in our area, but many varieties have wonderful fall foliage, like ‘Patriot’, that has red, orange and yellow fall color. Blueberry plants are a great addition even in small gardens where space is limited; ‘Top Hat’ is a small plant that grows only one to two feet high. ‘Chandler’ blueberry is one of the most popular varieties, and its berries are the largest blueberries in the world.

 The National Firewise Communities Program is designed to encourage solutions to protect people and property from the risk of wildfire before a fire starts.  Firewise focuses on planning, landscaping, construction and home maintenance.  Financial grants are offered to residents making landscaping or structural improvements to their properties, which can increase the survivability of their home in the event of a wildfire.  The list of firewise plants includes many of the plants we have at the nursery.  If you apply for a firewise grant and receive one you may obtain many of the plants for your new landscape here at Pleasant Hill Nursery. Some of the plants on the list we carry include; hosta, daylily, iris, salal, vine maple, ponderosa pine, flowering currant, garden carnation, big leaf maple flowering dogwood and many others.  Contact www.firewise.org for more information.  Even if you don’t receive a grant there is much good information on ways to improve your property to protect against wildfires including the one we can help you with which is selecting the right plants for your firewise landscape.
