FARWEST SHOW: Our Hope

Next week is the annual Oregon Association of Nurseries’ Farwest Show (8/26-8/28).  We have been an exhibitor at this show for many years and always find it to be a great source of business leads and a good chance to catch up with our customers and fellow nursery and industry professionals.  We head into this year’s show with some uncertainty due to this dreadful economy.  We’ve heard that there will be less exhibitors this year - not a big surprise given the times. I’m guessing we’ll see less attendees too with people cautiously guarding every dollar they spend.

So what will this year’s Farwest Show bring?  It has been a very tough couple of years for everyone we know – especially in the nursery industry.   These are unchartered times.  With unemployment at shocking highs and housing and commercial building starts at staggering lows, it’s having a huge impact on those of us that grow and peddle plants for a living.  I think we’ve all adjusted to the notion that this situation will not improve quickly and we’re all buckling down even more for a slow recovery.  In addition, we must consider that there will be a new normal.  Certainly what we experienced during the recent “glory days” was anything but normal. Sadly we were lulled into believing that it was.  Lesson learned.

We know now that we must shift our course, cinch our belts yet tighter and maintain a slow and steady course. The decision to exhibit this year was not one we made lightly.  After careful deliberation we decided to march on - to maintain our presence.  We are hopeful that we see some of our loyal customers there and find a few promising new prospects as well.  One thing is certain:  If we do not attend, there is no chance of that happening.  And perhaps, once we’ve made our way through this three day show, we will head home on Saturday feeling like we’ve seen a glimpse of light at the of the tunnel.
