How to Harvest and Prune Lavender: Step by Step

Posted by: Ashley in summerpleasant hill nurserygrowing on Print

Memorial Day through Labor Day is the time to harvest lavender and to prune the lavender plant.

First, grab a handful of lavender, and using a hand scythe, cut the flowers from the plant. Repeat until all the lavender has been removed.

Second, shape the plant’s top. Using hand hedge pruners, cut the plant flat across the top, taking care not to cut off all of the green new growth.

Next, working around the side of the plant, shear the sides. The desired shape is similar to a half dome.

The harvested lavender, ready for a bouquet, drying or culinary use.

A few weeks later, your lavender plant will be covered with new growth. The plant will continue to look fabulous throughout the winter.
