A Live Christmas Tree is a Gift that Keeps on Giving

A cut Christmas tree is a great tradition until you consider how much you pay for them and compare it to the few weeks you actually decorate with them. Instead you can buy a live tree that is comparable in price and with a little work it can transition from your holiday centerpiece to a beautiful addition to your landscape.

After the glow of holiday cheer fades (usually January 2nd) you will need to put your tree somewhere like a garage or shop to help it readjust to the winter climate here in the Pacific Northwest. If you live in the north east or mid-west you will probably need to lay it in your bed, apply heavy comforters, and spoon it at night or you can just make sure it doesn't freeze. After a few weeks you can move the tree outside to a protected area close to the house. When temperatures begin to rise in mid-spring you can plant, fertilize, and prune if necessary. Don't limit yourself to just conifers and more traditional types of trees either. If you have landscape ideas in mind already then choose those plants for your tree. A cone sheared Blue Girl Holly or a silver blue foliaged Eucalyptus neglecta will add interest to holiday decor and make a lasting impression in your landscape.
