Rainier Cherries

Our writings are usually about plants we grow or musings about the weather or other situations concerning plants, nurseries or other areas closely related.  This one is a bit of a stretch out of that realm.  We do have one Rainier Cherry tree in a number fifteen pot for sale, price of fifty dollars.  That’s the relation and now here is the connection.  Today is my husband Joey’s Birthday, so the dedication of this piece to him and a bit about him.  Years ago he was driving north from Oregon to Eastern Washington and then on to Puget Sound.

As he drove through the Wenatchee area he stopped and bought five pounds of Rainier cherries.  They are the best, he found out that day, red and yellow fruits full of juice and that once a year flavor of fresh cherries.  Joey was planning to take them to relatives as a gift.  By the time he reached Olympia most, if not all, of them were gone.  Yummm. A week or so ago he saw Rainier cherries in the grocery store for sale, starting to get hungry for them and a bit anxious that he had missed the season he had me call Hood River where we have a customer who grows just these favorite fruits.  I called and left a message, farmers are in the field this time of year.  Then I checked my calendar and saw that I had written in large letters that the second weekend in July is the time in Hood River for cherries.  Road trip planned. The right off the tree, brief period of deliciousness has not been missed, a sweet adventure to look forward to.  Happy Birthday Joey!
