Secret talents

PHN pumpkinYou never know what secret talents people you work with my have. Take Scott Cully for instance. He's the General Manager at Fall Creek Farm & Nursery. Just a stone's throw away from our nursery, Fall Creek is the world's leading blueberry nursery stock grower. They're an amazing operation, if you're not familiar with them. Well, apparently they hire some pretty amazing people too. I recently learned that Scott is a Guinness Book of World Record holder for carving the largest pumpkin (weighing 1689 pounds). However, it's not just about the size of the pumpkin, the designs he carves are incredible. (See photo in Register Guard article linked here.)

Last week Scott traveled to New York to appear on the Today Show to carve one of his infamous pumpkins for them. When I learned of that, Scott humbly shared his claim-to-fame as the record holder.

I remember last year we were so taken with a pumpkin Scott had carved with the Pleasant Hill Nursery logo on it. He sent it over as a gift and we were all so thrilled and impressed. Now I realize that this pumpkin was only the tip of the iceberg of his pumpkin carving abilities.

This article is a fun read and I learned a thing or two.For one, Scott once got to carve a pumpkin for then Vice-President Al Gore. Pretty cool. However, the biggest lesson I learned is to never underestimate the talents of those around you. You may be astounded to discover their true hidden talents. What's yours?
