1-12-10: Chamaecyparis obtusa 'Gracillis'

Chamaecyparis obtusa 'Gracillis' Dwarf may be a bit of a misnomer here as this plant grows to about fifteen feet tall by six feet wide, yet compared to other Hinoki cypress that reach 100 feet or so this is a smaller one.

We have featured three other chamaecyparis (Port Orford cedar, Koster’s false cypress and Boulevard cypress) in our ‘plant of the week’; each very different and not even looking related. ‘Gracilis’ has deep green foliage; it seems to dance on the branches. The habit is naturally open and can be accentuated with careful pruning. Plant in well-drained humus-rich soil, in full sun to bright shape, drought tolerant in partial shade. This is a slow growing plant and can be shaped to fit tight places in smaller gardens. As an evergreen ‘Gracilis’ is a year round beauty and especially radiant in winter when neighbor plants have been put to sleep.
