Pinus ponderosa 'Willamette Valley Strain' We grow the Willamette Valley variety of this stately pine. What do we like about this tree? Let’s mention the flaky terra-cotta red bark that shows up as the trunks get about 12” thick, the glossy green foliage with needles 6”-9” and the egg-shaped cones 3”-6” long, a classic pinecone. This Oregon native tree can be grown as a specimen tree or in groves. It is good as a bonsai or container tree. At maturity the ponderosa pine will reach 125’-180’ tall by 3’-6’ in diameter. This pine is straight trunked and well branched at youth, aging to a distinctive beauty with a textured upright trunk topped by a loose mass of heavy branches with tufts of brushy foliage. Grow these special trees in full sun in upland areas or in seasonally wet places. The seeds are an important food source to wildlife. It’s always a good day when you plant a tree.
