Erica darleyensis 'Mediterranean Pink' The sunny days of winter and the few striking blooms that catch our eyes make us think that spring is here or at least just around the corner. Yellow jasmine, pink and fragrant viburnum bodnantense and vivid Mediterranean Pink Heather are a few of the flowers starting to brighten our days. This heather is a vigorous and hardy variety growing in a perfect mound if planted in its preferred full sun. Growing well in open gardens and rock gardens ‘Med Pink’ requires acidic well drained soil and a bit of summer water. It will reach a size of 2 feet by 2 feet, needing only to be pruned for shape after flowering. This heather will flower from late fall often into April with bell shaped pink flowers, a very important Northwest plant for winter blooms. The bees are grateful for these off season flowers and on sunny winter days you will see them busily working there. Heather is considered an evergreen groundcover, this one covered with deep green needle like leaves. Plant in swaths with crocus, snowdrops, and early daffodils.
