10-20-09: Agastache 'Black Adder

Agastache 'Black Adder' It is October and the hyssop is still in its full glory of beautiful violet purple flowers surrounded by dark green foliage.

Yesterday I planted this aromatic perennial herb with an osmanthus delavayi, bright yellow yarrow, berggarten sage, Blue oat grass, a peony and daffodil bulbs for a year of color and interest. Hyssop grows best in full sun with good air circulation and grows to about three feet by three feet. The more you cut it back the more it continues to grow and flowers. The flowering season is summer and fall and during this time hummingbirds, butterflies and other pollinators are frequent visitors. At the end of the season the finches visit and feast on the seeds. Hyssop can be made into a tasty tea, the flowers added to salads and sweets, or just eaten raw as a licorice flavored bite while gardening. Just to top off how great this plant is, add drought tolerant and deer proof.
