10-22-08: Quercus borealis

Quercus borealis The Northern Red Oak has brilliant orange, brick red and russet brown fall leaf color. A fast growing tree, it easily reaches 100 feet as it forms a round spreading canopy.

Oaks attract wildlife as it provides cover, food (acorns) and nesting sites for birds and mammals. They are also very tolerant of urban conditions. An oak tree, a very solid tree to plant, is a symbol of strength and endurance. Reasons to plant and save trees!

  • Trees provide oxygen, absorb the carcinogens and clean the air.
  • Trees absorb the dust and allergens and decrease lung diseases.
  • Trees provide shade and promote walking.
  • Trees protect the soil and the surroundings and decrease the temperature of the environment.
  • Trees promote and protect the health of the community.

Taken from the Public Health Foundation of India website.

My favorite reason on this list is to 'provide shade and promote walking.' In the fall when the leaves are brilliant colors, your feet go sliding through kicking them up and you have a couple of friends at your side, a smile on your face, all this from trees. What could be better?
