10-27-09: Chamaecyparis 'Kosteri'

Chamaecyparis 'Kosteri' The swirly skirt of a flamenco dancer is what I think of when I see this evergreen dressed in bright green horizontal foliage.

This image may be a stretch as the only color this plant provides is green, but what magnificent colors of green. The inner reaches of Koster’s False Cypress are a dusky blue green, as it fans out towards the tips the color lightens and brightens to a glowing mossy chartreuse. It evokes movement. That said it is a sturdy evergreen growing slowly 4 feet tall by 5 feet wide or so and providing a year round presence in any garden. In a mixed border it is the backdrop for many more vibrant flowers. We have it growing in front of the nursery mixed with scabiosa, Henfield Brillant sunrose, Otto Quast lavender, autumn joy sedum, Elijah blue fescue and a bit of wintergreen at its feet. This dancer of a plant likes sun or part shade and moist well drained soil. Chamaecyparis ‘Kosteri’ is no wallflower, choose one or more for your garden.
