10-4-11: Dryopteris erythrosora- 'Autumn Fern'

Ferns were a part of the ancient world, living long before the evolution of seed-bearing plants. Spreading by spores, these prolific plants have continued to thrive in the modern world.

The Autumn Fern, a choice example, is highly adaptable and low-maintenance. It essentially requires no care once it is established. To keep it looking extra tidy, you can clip older fronds at the base when new fronds unfurl. And what a sight those young fronds of spring are! Starting out a bright red, they transition into an autumnal shade of brassy orange. By summer, the fronds have turned a pleasant green, only to return to the glory of their autumn color just in time for fall. Throughout the winter, the lacy foliage will add interest and delight to the shade garden.

This is an award winning fern. It has been named a Great Plant Pick for the Pacific Northwest and been awarded a Garden of Merit Award by the Royal Horticultural Society. Additionally, Martha Stewart herself has sung the praises of this fern.

This fern grows best in shady areas, thriving in part sun as long as it is not afternoon sun. It can be somewhat heat tolerant, however, if it is given proper shade and adequate moisture. It likes well-drained, moist soil. It will grow to a height and width of approximately two feet. Most deer will leave it alone- making it deer resistant, although not deer-proof. Plant this fern with hostas and hydrangeas or highlight its winter beauty in a planting of evergreen huckleberries and eucalyptus.
