|
Dryopteris remota This is a fern one might see in the shire of the Hobbit or in Harry Potter’s world as they are a large typical fern of the British Isles. Little fuss and many years of beauty are what you can expect when you plant ferns. This wood fern is impressive and easy to grow with its beautiful fronds growing 2’ high by 3’ wide. The new fronds are a bright green with ruffled leaves and yellow spores on the back. As the fern ages the green darkens and the spore sacs turn brown as does the stem which is a bit hairy. To keep this semi-evergreen fern looking its best just remove bent or damaged fronds and you will enjoy this fern year round. Grow Dryopteris in shade or semi shade in a woodland setting. Pair it with hostas, hydrangas, vine maples, Bloodgood maple, osmanthus heterphyllus ‘variegatus’ and other ferns.
