10-7-08: Acer rubrum 'Red Sunset'

Acer rubrum 'Red Sunset' With its bright scarlet autumn color, Acer rubrum ‘Red Sunset’® has colorful leaves on a majestic tree.

True to its rubrum name, many parts are red including the flowers, twigs and seeds as well as the signature fall leaves. 'Red Sunset' is a big tree 60’-90’ tall with a 40’ spread, something to think about before planting. It is very adaptable, able to grow in swamps as well as poor dry soils, and from sea level to 3,000’. A rapid grower with an upright habit, it is used in the garden as a shade tree or as a street tree but avoid planting it under wires. In addition to its great beauty, it is an important tree for wild life, with bees, birds and chipmunks using it for feed and cover. And, if so inclined it can be used to extract maple syrup and lumber. The state tree of Rhode Island, Acer rubrum is a native and prolific eastern North American tree. ‘Red Sunset’® is a cultivar introduced in 1966 by J. Frank Schmidt, Jr. of Boring Oregon.
