11-11-08: Weigela florida 'Variegata'

Weigela florida 'Variegata' Weigela is a group of shrubs that grow in an arching fashion with bright tubular flowers. They have been around for quite a while as garden plants, from at least the 1800’s.

You may have moved into a house with one or more in the garden. Left untended weigelas get a bit rangey and one is tempted to get rid of them all together. Yet with a bit, or a lot of pruning (removing old wood, dead wood, crossing branches) , some weeding and a little mulch you will be quickly rewarded by this plant. Weigelas respond well to some human touch. Because weigelas have been around for a while they have the qualities of an enduring plant, hardy, and lovely, attractive to hummingbirds and butterflies, drought tolerant once established and many years of gracing the garden with little care. We offer two varieties: ‘Red Prince and ‘Variegata’ ‘Red Prince’ – dark fresh green leaves, rich red tubular flowers. ‘Variegata’ – lovely leaves of bright green, edged with lighter green fading to cream, pink flowers outside with a pale pink inside. Both weigelas grow about eight feet high by eight feet wide. They bloom May and June and often rebloom later in the summer. They like sun but will do fine in partial shade. Plant ‘Variegata’ with Hidcote Superior Lavender and Berggarten Sage. Plant ‘Red Prince’ with Phormium tenax ‘Bronze’, Russian sage, ‘Autumn Joy’ Sedum and Stella d’oro daylily. Give them room to grow and you will be rewarded by these choice heirloom plants.
