Choisya ternata There are many workhorse plants out there that don’t scream for attention due to their great beauty, abundant flowers or some other unusual and grand attribute yet they contribute their due and are a valuable asset in their simplicity and humble usefulness. Choisya, Mexican Orange is this simple beauty. Use it as hedge material, formal and trimmed, informal and loose. Use it to stand alone as a foundation plant, nice looking all year with bright green lustrous leaves and pure white flowers blossoming in spring and again in autumn. Use it mixed in borders to add a bit of green- white color and an orange blossom fragrance. Choisya is a perfect container plant, bright and elegant alone or mixed with other plants. Choisya grows 5 to 8 feet tall and wide, it is easy to prune and grows back from the base when cut back hard. It likes full sun to part-shade, is deer proof and drought tolerant once established. This Southwest American/Mexican native attracts butterflies when in bloom and the crushed leaves are fragrant year round. Choisya ternate was named after the Swiss botanist Jacques Denis Choisya. Add Mexican Orange to bouquets for fullness, fragrance and beauty, what a lovely workhorse.
