11-24-09: Ribes sanguinieum

Ribes sanguinieum Ribes sanguineum is a hardy native and what I call ‘an edge of the woods plant’.

That means it is often found growing between full sun and shade on the edge of the forest. So it will be happy growing in full sun as well as the filtered light under trees. It is deciduous and grows to eight feet high by six feet wide. Sanguineum refers to blood and that is the color of the stems and the flowers in bud. This deciduous shrub flowers in early spring and is happily frequented by hummingbirds that may have overwintered and need some long awaited nectar. As a native plant it is deer proof and drought tolerant once established. Plant with other natives or in an existing garden where early flowers and crisp folded foliage is desired. Ribes sanguineum was chosen as plant of the week, today the 24th of November, in honor of my daughter Ruby on her twenty-first birthday. The ruby red color of the flowers reminds me of her name; and she and the red flowering currant grew up together on the edge of our woods.
