11-9-10: Cedrus deodara

An admired tree in the landscape, this true cedar has a pyramidal shape and blue, almost silver foliage and graceful soft branches.

Deodar Cedar, a lovely specimen tree, is the national tree of Pakistan and comes from the western Himalayas. The entire plant is aromatic and is used for timber construction of temples and palaces. Deodar comes from the Sanskrit word meaning ‘timber of the gods’.

As evergreen and a conifer, Deodar Cedar grows over one hundred feet tall by thirty feet wide. It has two inch long needles and 12-15 needles per rosette perched on branches that also support upright barrel-shaped cones. It is fast growing when young; two feet per year, drought tolerant once established and can tolerate air pollution. If you have no room for this special tree I encourage you to enjoy it in other gardens.

The month of November we are focusing our ‘plant of the week’ on B& B stock. This cedar is only available in B & B. See Josh’s blog for more information on B & B.
