12-1-09: Cryptomeria 'Tanzu'

Cryptomeria 'Tanzu' I love to talk about planting trees. I know a lot of times this is impossible for some folks because they live in apartments or condos or their garden is full and there is no more room for a giant sequoia or a red alder or some other grand tree too large for most urban gardens.

This week we are featuring a tree that will fit almost everyone’s ‘garden’. ‘Tansu’ Japanese cedar is a dainty evergreen with fine textured bright green foliage that grows 2-3 feet in 10 years. Dwarf conifers look good with very little work and add color and form in the winter months. I know this small plant may not be considered a tree but we are taking that liberty so everyone can plant a tree. ‘Tanzu’ can be grown in a container, as a bonsai or in the landscape. It likes full sun or partial shade. Consider using ‘Tanzu’ with its irregular pyramidal shape as a holiday tree.
