12-14-10: Cornus alba 'Elegantissima'

Red, red , red twigs are the winter gift of this plant.

Imagine upright slender brilliant maroon branches seven feet tall in front of a nice deep green yew hedge with a bit of white heather or winter flowering cyclamen tucked beneath. Lovely! This Siberian native has fragrant creamy white flowers in the spring, grey-green leaves, with white margins in the summer turning soft shades of pink/orange in autumn and then the blood red stems in the winter. A mass planting of this dogwood is magnificent! Dogwoods like full to partial sun, they can stand damp or wet soils and heavy clay and they can control erosion on stream banks. For continued bright stems cut back one third of the plant each year in the late dormant season (Feb/March) or all stems to the ground to force new growth.
