12-15-09: Buxus 'Green Mountain'

Buxus 'Green Moutain' The next couple of weeks we are featuring holiday trees. In honor of Hanukkah we have‘Green Mountain’ Boxwood.

Shaped somewhat like a dreidel it can be covered in a string of small white bulbs to add a festive note to this holiday of lights. ‘Green Mountain’ boxwood is dense in form and naturally shaped like an elegant pyramid. It has bright green leaves that retain color throughout the winter. For a crisper form shear the plant. ‘Green Mountain’ will grow well in sun to part shade and reach a height of four to five feet and about three to four feet wide. A good urban plant, boxwoods are tolerant of air pollution and can be container grown. In general boxwoods are easy to transplant because of their shallow roots, so if you have one in the garden that is not in quite the right place consider moving it. They may also be cut to the ground in March to renovate the plant. This will allow a misshaped or damaged or overgrown plant to come up fresh and new. Use in the garden in mass plantings, hedges or containers. As an added feature the small, yet fragrant, creamy yellow flowers in spring attract honey bees. This plant grows well in the city and the deer do not bother it in the country. ‘Green Beauty’ was this year’s winner of the Cary Award, honoring distinctive plants for New England.
