12-2-08: Rhus glabra- Sumac

Rhus glabra- Sumac The glorious scarlet leaves of this native tree are its crowning glory.

Native to North America this smaller tree grows 10 feet to 20 feet high. During the growing season the leaves are deep green and lighter underneath. Sumac has chartreuse flowers (blooms July- August) followed by showy clusters of scarlet fruit (seeds ripen Sept – Nov). The bark on the mature wood is smooth and grey to brown. Plant in full sun in a mass planting, on the edge of the woods or as a bank cover. This open growing large shrub can grow in tough places, disturbed soils as well as along the edge of a river bank. I just planted one between a driveway and a wall. Once established they need very little water. Plant with ornamental grasses and colorful deciduous trees for a lovely naturalistic display.
