2-16-10: Rhododendron 'PJM' |
|
Rhododendron 'PJM' Plum purple, chocolate brown and deep mahoganies are the winter hues of the leaves of this small (4 feet by 4 feet) full rhododendron. Visually attractive, it is also fragrant; you will notice its spicy sweet perfume on a warm day or when the leaves are crushed. All this comes from a rhododendron that hasn't yet bloomed. Expect exceptional flowers early (late Feb. through early April) profuse and vivid in a bright, lavender pink color. By May the leaf color has turned a bright green and will remain so until late autumn. PJM will do well in less than ideal rhododendron conditions, which are moist, cool, acidic soils. As one of the easiest rhododendrons to grow it is both heat and cold hardy. Plant in a typical woodland situation or mix it with sunnier plants such as lavender, rosemary and dahlias. To set off winter colors of PJM plant it near witch hazels and Cornus saguinea 'Midwinter Fire' or some other brightly stemmed dogwood. Winter can be bright and inspiring in the Pacific Northwest with the addition of a few choice plants, PJM rhododendron among them.
