2-17-09: Cedrus atlantica glauca

Cedrus atlantcia glauca The Atlas cedar tree symbolizes immortality. It should not be a surprise then, that they can live for a thousand years.

As the name implies, Atlas cedars are native to North African's Atlas Mountains spanning Morocco, Algeria, and Tunisia, where they grow in stands at an altitude between 1,000 to 2,000 meters. The Atlas cedar is a noble and majestic tree with stunning and well developed "arms" that is often noticed, though, perhaps, too often overlooked for planting. Sight it with adequate space, in full sun, and in well drained soil. Atlas cedars also are very tolerant of pollution and grow well in urban situations. The blue green needles grow in tufted clusters or rosettes that appear star-like and delicate. The attractive purplish-brown female cones (3-4 inches tall by 2 inches wide) grow on top of the branch. Male pollinator cones are smaller and resemble other conifer cones. The bark is gray and smooth for the first 30 years and then develops an attractive plate-like pattern. The wood of the Atlas cedar is used in building and for furniture, while aromatic essential oil is derived from the needles. If you know of an Atlas cedar that is to come down in your neighborhood, make sure a wood salvager or urban forester is notified so the valuable tree can be put to good use. Grows slow to moderate 60 feet tall by 30 feet wide. Cedrus atlantica glauca pendula is the weeping form of this tree.
