2-3-09: Rhododendron 'Very Berry' |
|
Rhododendron 'Very Berry' Yesterday one of our favorite landscape architects came by to walk the nursery and let his creative juices flow by looking at plants and letting them sing to him. When he returned to the office we asked him what was appealing and exceptional and he said the buds on ‘Very Berry’ Rhododendron popped out and said yes! We like when gardeners, designers and architects make plans by looking at what is available and looking great, and his observation of ‘Very Berry’ was spot on. Right now they are chartreuse and about 3 inches long sitting above a 10 inch deep fir-green leaves. It looks great in bud right now in February, and in early June it will bloom with grand cone-shaped trusses of a deep raspberry red. ‘Very Berry’ grows to 6 feet by 6 feet in 10 years. It is a vigorous grower hardy to minus 15 degrees. Rhododendrons like rich, well-drained soil enriched with organic matter and topped with mulch. They require regular summer water due to shallow roots. The spend blossoms need to be removed (deadheaded) and new growth can be pinched back the first few years to encourage a nice shaped plant. Companion plants for Rhododendrons include astilbe, Oregon grape, pieris, viburnum, red oak, sword ferns and ‘Blue Wave’ hydrangea.
