2-8-11: Vaccinium corymbosum 'Legacy' |
|
Legacy blueberry is a 1993 release from the USDA Blueberry Research Station in New Jersey, considered the ‘best’ flavored blueberry, a heavy producer, and a beautiful plant in the garden. Besides its delicious taste, consider how lovely and adaptable the blueberry bush is as a garden and landscape plant. This is a substantial shrub (4 – 6 feet tall and wide) that truly has year round appeal. In winter this particular blueberry holds onto its leaves making it a semi-deciduous shrub, the leaves remain green tinged with a bronze cast atop red stems. In early spring the attractive bark becomes brighter, followed by the precious white, bell-shaped blossoms whose appearance is a sign of the sweet abundance to come. The leaves unfurl in shades of green and red followed by the luscious bounty of blueberries. Legacy ripens in August (a medium large sized fruit) with a uniquely robust flavor. Autumn brings the fall hues of color to the leaves. Blueberries indeed have year round beauty. Blueberries like sun or part shade, acid soil (mulch with sawdust or bark) and thrive on summer water. Plan alone or in groups, they make a wonderful edible hedge. Legacy can be container grown. It is a vigorous grower and a heavy producer as well as disease resistant. And of course the berries taste good and are nutritious. Legacy is known as the gold bush due to its high yields. Blueberry plants have a long life (60+ years) and yet can produce the first year they are planted.
