2-9-10: Rhododendron 'Cunningham White'

Rhododendron 'Cunningham White' February is time to remind you about rhododendrons.

A short review: Rhododendrons like acidic, humus rich, well drained soil, and most can grow in full sun to part shade, they range in size from a small shrub to treelike, normally leaves are evergreen and the flowers are very attractive, for best results summer water is needed.

Rhododendrons are very versatile; at home in a Northwest garden as well as a pleasant addition to mixed borders and some varieties adding a definite tropical look with large leaves and huge colorful flowers. In other words, they can be added to most gardens with pleasing effects. They can be grown singly or grouped en masse, depending on the desired look.

The featured rhododendron this week is Cunningham White, a well behaved plant growing 4 feet by 4 feet, with dark green foliage, and lovely flowers, deep rosy pink opening to pure white with a yellow eye. It blooms late May into June, which makes it a perfect addition to a late spring flower garden. Plant it in large drifts near conifers or add in smaller quantities to an urban garden. It can be grown in full sun so don't be afraid to add it to a flower border where it will hold a spot as a year round evergreen and shine as it flowers in late spring.
