3-10-09: Pieris japonica 'Sarabande'

Pieris japonica 'Sarabande' Pieris is a common plant in gardens, yet it’s such a jewel.

The beauty of the blooms arrives just when we need that reminder of spring in mid-March. Often called lily of the valley shrub, maybe string of pearl plant would be just as descriptive. ‘Sarabande’ is a dwarf form of pieris growing 3-4 feet tall and wide. Pieris is an attractive plant the year round. It has deep evergreen foliage, pale green flower buds opening into bell-shaped creamy white fragrant flower. The flowers are an early nectar source for honey and mason bees and they are excellent in flower arrangements. All pieris do well in urban gardens, this one especially because of its compact size. Plant in full sun or bright shade in rich, well drained, acidic soil. 'Sarabande' does well in a container. Pieris, like other ericaceous plants, like deep watering during summer dry spells. Plant with rhododendrons, ferns and hostas. Side note: the name pieris comes from Pierdes a Greek goddess presiding over the arts and sciences.
