3-17-09: Mahonia aquifolium

Mahonia aquifolium Oregon’s state flower is this week’s plant of the week.

Native to Oregon and the West Coast, Oregon Grape is very adaptable. Grow it anywhere sun to deep shade and all soil types. Bright yellow flowers start to bloom as early as January and often last through May. The flowers attract bees and are followed by tasty berries that are prized for jellies and by the birds. The foliage has holly like leaves that are bronzy and tender when new, turning deep green throughout the summer and red in the winter. Oregon Grape will grow 6 feet tall by 5 feet wide but can be cut back to the ground to rejuvenate. Plant as a hedge, or mix in with other natives or rhododendrons. This plant grows wild in forested areas and is a prized landscape plant.
