Cercidiphyllum japonicum- Katsura Tree This is an elegant tree; lovely, stunning, graceful and a great treat every season of the year. Right now, late winter and yes almost spring; the trees are just starting to unfurl their new leaves, a striking reddish- purple color. Summer brings blue green color to the rounded, heart shaped leaves. And then autumn comes and the leaves turn butter yellow with a burnt sugar aroma, golden and fragrant. Plant these trees as a grove if you can and if not as a single tree they are stunning. They have non aggressive roots so they are a very suitable overstory trees for rhododendrons, ferns, hellebores, pieris, hydrangeas and other shade lovers. Katsura grow to 25 feet in ten years and eventually 40 to 60 feet tall and about 25 feet wide. Plant in full sun to part shade, these trees need some summer water so water deeply every week during the dry summer months. Mulch will help keep the roots cool and damp and hold in water.
