4-12-11: Viburnum davidii |
|
While visiting a friend and her garden in Seattle I was reminded of how lovely this plant is, even though it is quite common in commercial settings, the single viburnum davidii under the plum tree in the deep shade surrounded by sword ferns and as a backdrop to a large stone frog was outstanding, especially this time of year when the bulbs are showing color yet the perennials are still asleep in the ground. Viburnum davidii is an evergreen shrub with handsome foliage; the interesting leaves are deep green and creased down the length of the leaf. The flowers are tiny, white and tubular and full of nectar for the spring pollenizers. Following the flowers are the exceptional metallic blue berries that will last through the winter months. Expect this shrub to grow 3’-4’ high and wide. Plant in sun to shade, tolerates most soils, needs summer water in dry situations.
