4-13-10: Acer palmatum 'Shishigashira'

Acer palmatum 'Shishigashira' I first saw this maple in autumn in the arboretum in Portland. I loved it and wanted one in my garden.

Lion's Head maple glows in the fall. When I first saw it was golden. The fall and early winter color ranges from gold to orange to rust red. As with most Japanese maples, they truly are a specimen plant for the garden. They deserve a front and center position. Another way to show them off is in a container on the patio, at your front entrance, or on the deck. Mine is in a robin's egg blue ceramic pot, planted with golden sage, tabor thyme and hen and chicks sedum. Shishigashira, (I love to say that name) grows in full sun to partial shade. In ten years it will be about seven feet tall by four feet wide. It is hardy to -20 degrees. This vase shaped maple has small deeply cut and curled bright green to yellow green leaves in spring and summer. As an added bonus, Lion's head maple are said to protect the garden.
