4-21-09: Prunus 'Mount Fuji'

Prunus 'Mount Fuji' Cherry blossoms are known to symbolize feminine beauty, clouds and to show the transient nature of life as the blooms come and go.

Japan has given the U. S. many cherry trees since 1912 as a sign of friendship. These trees were planted in public parks and along the shore in Washington D.C.

Mt. Fuji cherry is a favorite tree with its flat-topped, spreading, cloudlike nature and its ample, fragrant, white blossoms. The leaves, which unfurl after the blossoms, are slightly bronze tinged, once open they are a pale green. The bark is shiny and reddish brown.

This cherry averages twenty feet high and twenty-five feet wide and can grow larger in certain situations. It likes sunlight, good air circulation and drier, well-drained soil.

This is a lovely tree grown singly in a small garden, lining a walk or mass planted in a campus. It’s easy to understand why the cherry represents spring, life and beauty. Admire them in other gardens or plant your own.
