|
Syringa vulgaris 'Miss Ellen Willmott' Lilacs are a common yet essential plant in the garden. Most people are familiar with a lilac and have some memory associated with it such the sweet smell of the deep purple on the plant growing at the corner of Grandma's garden, stealing armfuls of blooms as you walked down the alley of your neighborhood where the flowers overhung the fences and were begging to be picked, or seeing surviving, lichen covered, lilacs at abandoned farms outlasting the buildings they were flanking. They are common and they are essential for their flowers (colors range from white to all shades of purple, blues, and pinks and almost red), fragrance and striking autumn leaf color. Lilacs grow as a single shrub or as a single or multiple trunked tree. They do best in full sun or partial shade. Lilacs are drought tolerant and the deer don't favor them as forage. Plant them in a mixed perennial border or mixed in with conifers and rhododendrons. An allee of lilacs couldnt be more beautiful or romantic. Lilacs make the perfect spring bouquet in a vase. We have Miss Ellen Willmott (large double creamy white florets) on single trunks. For the true lilac lover, visit the spectacular Hulda Klager Gardens in Woodland Washington.
