4-28-09: Magnolia 'Ann'

Magnolia 'Ann' Searching for a perfect, petite tree that could withstand clay soil and full sun I found ‘Ann’.

Magnolia ‘Ann’ with its 7 to 9 inch reddish purple goblet- shaped flowers that are fragrant to boot, ‘Ann’ with it leathery green foliage and soft grey bark in the winter is vigorous and hardy. It keeps blooming intermittently throughout the summer and the spring blooms are late (mid April-May) avoiding frost damage. This is the perfect plant to enhance and screen a small stone terrace. It grows 8 to 10 feet high by 8 feet wide. Plant with small sweet lavenders, a bit of rosemary, a few agapanthuses, and a couple of ‘Sunshine Blue’ blueberries, these plants establish well and do not disturb Magnolia ‘Ann’s roots.

Magnolia is named after French botanist Pierre Magnol who was a missionary in China and brought back many plants from there. Magnolias are a very ancient genus of plants evolving before honey bees. The flowers are such that they encourage pollination by beetles. Have you ever thought of a time before honey bees?
