4-7-09: Osmanthus delavayi

Osmanthus delavayi As the first hummingbirds arrive in early spring the perfect pure white flowers of osmanthus delavayi are opening up ready and waiting.

The fragrant, four petaled flowers are set off by the dark green leaves. Osmanthus means fragrant flowers in Greek. This elegant shrub lends itself to being pruned as a hedge or screen or it can be left to grow naturally. It recedes into the background or is used as a backdrop except when it is flowering and then it is magnificent. Osmanthus delavayi grows 5 to 7 feet high with similar width. It tolerates all soil types and full sun or part shade. The tiny very dark green leaves are finely toothed and a normally dark shrub turns white in April when covered with fragrant tubular flowers. This plant was introduced in the 1800’s by Abbe Jean Marie Delavay, a French missionary in China.
