5-10-11: Syringa vulgaris 'Miss Ellen Willmott' |
|
Lilacs are a common yet essential plant in the garden. Most people are familiar with a lilac and have some memory associated with this sweet and singularly fragrant flower. They are common and they are essential for their flowers (colors range from white to all shades of purple, blues, and pinks and almost red), fragrance and striking autumn leaf color. Lilacs grow as a shrub or as a single or multiple trunked tree. They do best in full sun or partial shade. Lilacs are drought tolerant and the deer don't favor them as forage. Plant them in a mixed perennial border or mixed in with conifers and rhododendrons. An allee of lilacs couldn’t be more beautiful or romantic. Lilacs make the perfect spring bouquet in a vase. This year we have added to our list of lilacs; including 'Adelaide Dunbar', double purple flowers, 'Ludwig Spaeth', reddish-purple flowers, 'Charles Joly', deep wine-red double flowers and one of my favorites 'President Lincoln', wedgewood blue single flowers and oh so fragrant. We also have Miss Ellen Willmott (large double creamy white florets) on a single trunk. For the true lilac lover, visit the spectacular Hulda Klager Gardens in Woodland Washington.
