5-11-10: Rhododendron 'Nova Zembla' |
|
Do you want something red, red, red in your garden in the month of May? Do you want a very hardy, very vigorous, very showy plant? And I bet you weren’t thinking Rhododendron but Nova Zembla may be just the ticket. It grows five feet by five feet, large dark green leaves that set off the showy red flowers whose trusses measure about 5 inches across. And they are red; a deep, deep red more on the bluish side of things that the orange side. Nova Zembla is an ‘Ironclad’ rhododendron meaning very hardy or difficult to fail with, expect success with this plant. A note on rhododendron care: deadheading is the gardening chore of removing spent blossoms that result in energy being put into the growth of the plant rather than seed production. Nova Zembla rhododendrons are encouraged to bloom again in late summer/early fall after deadheading.
