5-12-09: Rhododendron 'Rangoon'

Rhododendron 'Rangoon' You must see the red of Rangoon.

In my mind it is the perfect deep, rich, crimson that I want to see in a flower. The vase shaped flowers sit on nice green foliage and are set off by the chartreuse of the new growth buds. I love the color and when I brought the plant into the office to inspire me everyone who looked at it wanted it in their garden.

Along with the perfect color the size of Rangoon is very pleasing. It grows 3’ by about 5’ in 10 years, a very good size for the small garden or as a swath of rich color and substance. Rangoon is sun tolerant, has an early-midseason bloom and has a nice winter look with the buds atop the dark green foliage.
