5-22-07: Ceanothus

Ceanothus ‘Victoria’ looks good year-round, with its dense, evergreen habit and its deeply veined, very glossy dark green leaves.

In June it stops traffic, as it is smothered under a blanket of tiny, bright blue flowers held in tight clusters. Its dense growth and tolerance of shearing make it a candidate for hedges, screens and windbreaks. When in bloom, it attracts bees, butterflies and hummingbirds. This dense, rounded, evergreen shrub grows to about 4 feet high and 6 feet wide in ten years. Like most California lilacs, ‘Victoria’ is a tough plant that is extremely drought tolerant once established.
