Actinidia arguta Reports are coming in that food plants are ‘going like hotcakes’ in the nursery trade this year. Hardy Kiwi is another one for the list. Differing from fuzzy kiwi (common grocery store variety) hardy kiwi is smaller smooth skinned, sweeter and higher in Vitamin C content. In the landscape they can be grown like grapes over a trellis, on a wall or as a vine up a tree. They require rich well drained soil, full sun and water during the growing season. Dark green leaves and fragrant white flowers cover the vine, the tasty fruit ripens in October. They are disease and pest free. Dumbarton Oaks Kiwi comes from an old estate in Washington D.C. It is early ripening sweet and delicious. Kiwis are long lived plants lasting 50 year or more. They need a male pollinator. Plants come potted one male one female.
