5-27-08: Spirea niponnica 'Snowmound' |
|
Spirea niponnica 'Snowmound' This spring flowering bush is reminiscent of grandmother’s garden, a wedding bouquet, a cottage garden. The word spiraea (Greek) means a plant used in garlands or wreaths. As old-fashioned and quaint as this plant appears, it can be used in an impressive swath (5-7 plants or more) producing a show of brilliant white and bright green suggesting a modern clean look. Snowmound Spirea matures at an even 5’x5’. It grows vase-like when young and gracefully arches with age. The blue green foliage is covered with pure white flowers in late May. Plant in full sun or partial shade. This plant adapts to poor soils, urban sites and drought situation when established. Avant-garde or quaint, Snowmound spiraea is a beautiful addition to the garden.
