5-3-11: Chamaecyprais nootkatensis 'Green Arrow'

The past few weeks we have been writing about trees suitable to small gardens. ‘Green Arrow’ weeping Alaska yellow cedar is another example.

Due to its narrow width and reasonable height is works well in tight places yet would be much admired if allowed to grow unfettered. This cultivar of a Pacific Northwest Native likes full sun and is tolerant of all soils as long as there is good drainage. Disease resistant, pest free, drought tolerant (once established) and deer proof it’s virtually bomb proof as far as a healthy plant. And as for looks it is quite unique; the foliage color is bright green with a tinge of blue and the branches lay directly against the trunk. It has a graceful elegance like a tall slender woman in a dramatic evening gown. It grows 15’-18’ high by 2’ wide in 10 years and eventually natures at 30’-35’ high by 4’-5’ wide.
