5-4-10: Spirea nipponica 'Shirobana'

Spirea nipponica 'Shirobana' Shirobana spirea is a small deciduous shrub that is often chosen for its flowers, white and deep pink florets cover this sweet plant in summer.

The colorful and attractive foliage is a nice green, tinged with burgundy. Spireas add a sweet old fashioned look to the garden; the flowers are dainty and perfectly formed. They make great cut flowers and the leaves are attractive as well. Spireas can be cut back to the ground after blooming and they will shoot up new branches to look like a perfectly rounded plant and look nice all winter, then ready to go again in the spring. Plant in full sun in a mixed border, or as a hedge or a sweep of color in front of other larger plants. I just planted 'Shirobana' spirea in front of a red leafed elderberry interplanted with canna lilies and other perennials. A Graham Blandy boxwood holds the corner of the bed. I think it will look spectacular when all is in bloom. This spirea grows to three feet high by three feet wide.
