6-13-08: Astilbe arendsii 'Amethyst'

Astilbe arendsii 'Amethyst' Glittering and sparkling is how the Greek define astilbe, which is a good description. The leaves are cut leaflets and have a bit of shine to them. Rising above the basal clump of foliage are light, airy, graceful flowers reaching upward in spires.

The flower blooms in whites, pinks and reds and the in between colors. Astilbe are a group of familiar perennials often clumped in the shade tolerant group of plants but some of the nicest ones I’ve seen in the Pacific Northwest grow in a sunny place resulting in very full plants with feathery leaves and fluffy plume flowers. Large swaths (10 or more) of astilbe look stunning, can also be grown in containers or as a single treasure. Astilbes grow 36”h x 18”w, require moist but not boggy soil, full to part sun, attract butterflies but not deer, slugs or squirrels. Plant them with hosta ‘Francee’, daylilies, monkshood or heuchara ‘Purple Palace’. The blooms come in June and are nice cut flowers, the spent flowers left on the plant add a bronzy interest to the winter garden. ‘Amethyst’ has a lavender/lilac pink flower, unique color that stands out in the garden.
