6-2-09: Vaccinium corymbosum 'Sunshine Blue'

Vaccinium corymbosum 'Sunshine Blue' With ‘Sunshine Blue’ Blueberry in our planters on the front porch, we have a daily reminder of the beauty and versatility of this semi-dwarf blueberry bush.

The leaves are a soft blue-green and the flowers are bright pink and will fade to creamy white. Even without the handfuls of sweet blueberries that will arrive in summer, this plant is a winner. The great thing about this landscape superstar is that it is evergreen, providing texture and color even in the bleak winter months. ‘Sunshine Blue’ is suited to many situations: a short hedge, mixed in with sun-loving perennials, in the vegetable garden as a permanent addition, or in a planter on the patio for easy berry harvesting. As with all blueberries, plant in full sun in acidic, well-drained soil and summer water is required. At maturity, ‘Sunshine Blue’ is 3 to 4 feet tall and wide and can be spaced 6 to 8 feet apart.
